The primary purpose of these signs is to direct individuals, particularly emergency responders or workers in hazardous environments, to the location of respiratory protective equipment (e.g., gas masks, oxygen tanks, and respirators) that can be used to protect the wearer from harmful substances in the air, such as toxic gases, dust, smoke, or vapors.
